How to store a follow-up of my Instagram stories

In this article you will find a trick to store a follow-up of your Instagram stories over time.

We all now the benefits of Instagram Stories, but since they only last 24 hours, it is complicated to manage their reports.

One solution for this issue could be to use the "Combine new with old results" option with a daily schedule (with the dimension date on the query) and yesterday as date range.

It's important to have the dimension Date on the query since it is a daily schedule.

The combine option doesn't allow you to get old data, but it allows you to keep the data you already have, so you can save the information from the stories every day without replacing it with the new day's data. Of course, this query will start on the day you start the schedule.

If the story it's older than 24 hours, you won't be able to gather its data since it doesn't exist anymore on Instagram's API. This is external to Dataslayer, Instagram has that 24h limitation for Instagram stories.

To do it it's very simple, just follow these steps:

Let's open Google Sheets and create a query with our Instagram Insights connector and the account you want to have the Instagram stories report.

If you don't know how to create a query you can learn it here.

Select on the date range "Yesterday"

Select the metrics you want to pull from your Instagram stories.
We selected all the metrics of the stories group.

Select the Date dimension and, if you want, select other dimensions you also want to pull.

In options section, select the option "Combine new with old results".

You can select as many options as you want. Learn more about Dataslayer advanced options here.

You can make a report on Looker Studio later with this data if you select the "Use format compatible with Looker Studio" option.

Finally, create a daily schedule to update the data daily and save the trigger.

Learn here how to create a schedule.

That's it! Now you have a follow-up of your Instagram Stories.
